Life is motoring along smoothly, at least on the Wedding Front. Invitation ordering is on the agenda for this afternoon, for anyone keeping score at home.

However, the Job Front is not going as well. The Front is bogged down and is now bearing more of a resemblance to the Battle of the Marne than anything else. While expecting it to be Blitzkrieg might have been overly optimistic, I'm still dissapointed in how things are going. I never heard a word from half the places I tried to apply to online, and I've been rejected everywhere else, and nothing new has popped up in my target area yet. Paitence I know, is a virtue, but I'm starting to get to the point where I'm going to be loosing sleep over this.

I mean, I don't even know what I'd do if I didn't get a job. I suppose I could keep working at the golf course until November closing, but that doesn't pay out quite the way I had in mind. 8.67 an hour is not exactly a living wage for those confronting marrige. Substitute teaching is also a posibilty, but it's a little more hit or miss than I would prefer. I'm really at a loss here. And yes, yes, I'm quite familiar with the concept of closing doors and opening windows, and I do beleive that, but sometimes it's hard not to get worried. I mean, one of the reasons I got the teaching certificate was so that I'd be immediatly employable. So far, not employed. I'm not even sure if I have any marketable skills beyond teaching. Somebody suggested trying my hand at journalism, and its got it's attractions, I suppose, but I'm not sure where, or how to go about getting into that feild. [livejournal.com profile] tante_in_hp suggested writing professionally, and while certainly attractive, I need to put some money in the bank before the length of time it would take to churn out something worth publishing professionally. For now, I guess it's just back to cruising websites and making phone calls for openings, and hoping for the best.

Speaking of hoping for the best, I hope everybody's battened down the hatches on the Gulf Coast, especially you [livejournal.com profile] kermi3. Hope this isn't a harbinger of another nasty hurricane season.

Could you specialise? I don't know where you're looking for jobs, but you could apply for history positions, or social issues (politics). These things seem to interest you.

I hope you find something soon. Can you let Sara know I'll answer her PM, soon, as well please? :o)

I've considered trying to get back into politics (I did a summer as a campaign intern), as a backup option, but this isn't an election year either, so it makes it a little tougher.

I've let her know!

I'll keep everybody posted on the job.

Chin up...

Keep the chin up GovtC. You know the job market doesn't really open up until late July and Aug. And I think you'll find that in a worst case scenario, substitute teaching won't be awful. From what I'm told you can actually have pretty steady work that way if you work for a decent size school district...and that will serve you well to get a job there the next year....

I'm buttoned up well...I should be fairly safe, Cindy was worse for us here. Godspeed to those on the Al-Fl coastline...Poor people just finished rebuilding their homes...

Thanks buddy. I know. It's just...the waiting just sucks. Espcially as I lay out large sums for wedding expenses. ;)

Glad to hear your safe. Keep in touch.

Kermi3 is right, now that I remember. The last few weeks before the school year starts, there is a flurry of hiring activity in school districts.

My Mum substitute taught for years. She got up in the morning, got ready for work and then when/if a call came she was just out the door. She could have worked every day if she wanted to. When she wanted a day off, she just didn't answer the phone in the morning.

When my brother finished his masters a couple summers ago, he spent the summer working in a factory (blech) while he job hunted. He was hired two weeks before the start of the school year and moved from the midwest to the east coast within a week of his initial interview. His wife and two small children packed up the house and followed him shortly thereafter.

I'm glad you considered my suggestion. You have talent, why not use it to your advantage professionally. And, I meant write to keep yourself busy professionally, not write instead of teaching. Write articles for magazines and submit them for consideration. That's a nice little extra bit of pocket money while you're interviewing and looking for a good teaching post. How much of your day does the job hunt really take before you're at your emotional limit? Good Luck!

You're right, of course. And intellectually, I know that. Waiting stinks, however, and it grates on the nerves. Something will come along evenutally.

Huh, I never thought about doing writing that way. I guess I don't really know how that process works. I guess maybe I should look into it. I could sure do with some extra cash right about now.

You could teach as an adjunct at a community college until something else opens up . . . (of course, I was only doing that until something else opened up and I'm now ready to begin my 8th year of adjuncting.) There're also tutor places, like Sylvan Learning. They offered me really good money and benefits, but it was an hour away and the hours were noon to 8 pm--It would have totally killed my time with my own children then.--maybe I ought to go talk to them now though--my baby is nearly 18.

I hadn't thought of looking at tutoring centers, thanks Kelly! I'll see what there is around Dartmouth.

The job market is a painful place to be right now, I know. But you're super-talented, and I know something good will cross your way soon.
